Student organizes anti-bully rally after school assault

A group in Grainger County is praying for the recovery of a student attacked last month at Washburn High School.

On Saturday night classmate Amanda Dunn organized a vigil hoping to start a community conversation about the bullying she says she sees in class.

It began last month when a fifteen year old student was attacked at their high school, sending her to the hospital.

Her step-sister reports the girl underwent surgery to repair bones in her face.

Union County Schools is the only school district in the 10News viewing area that failed to meet achievement goals on Tennessee's education report. In fact, the school system declined in seven of nine areas.

The Tennessee Department of Education released its annual report card on Thursday.

Concerning the district's achievement measures the state said, "...did not meet a majority of measures and declined in a majority of measures".

10News initially thought the following story fell into that category. However, before it aired we asked a couple of questions.  That's when the story and the people involved in it reminded us that things are not always as they seem.

Grainger Co. residents pray for attacked Washburn student

Grainger County residents are praying for a girl who sheriff deputies was beaten so badly by her peers, she had to go to the hospital.

Authorities say four female students attacked another 15-year-old female student at Washburn School Monday. The victim was released from the hospital Wednesday.

Members of Sunrise Baptist Church in Rutledge opened their Wednesday service with a prayer for the girl. Pastor Scott Howerton said incidents like the one authorities say happened at Washburn School prove violent acts can happen anywhere.

Teens charged with assault at Grainger school

A Grainger County high school student has been released from the hospital after being treated for injuries received in an assault at Washburn High School on Monday.

In a news release, Grainger County Sheriff Scott Layel said four teen girls were arrested in connection with the assault on a 15-year-old female victim.

One of the girls was charged with aggravated assault and the other three were charged with assault, Layel said.

The victim was being treated at UT Medical Center and was listed in good condition, according to Layel.

Students learn real world science on Physics and Chemistry Day

High school students from Tennessee and Kentucky learned how science works in the real world.

On Thursday, 250 students from four area high schools attended Physics and Chemistry Day at Walters State Community College's Claiborne campus.

They saw how astronomy, martial arts and machines all used physics and chemistry during a presentation, and during hands-on experiments with Walters State students.

LMU expands campus into Cumberland Gap

An East Tennessee university will expand this January.

Lincoln Memorial University, in Harrogate, has invested $1.2 million into a project that will transform a part of of downtown Cumberland Gap. The university bought a convention center, log cabin, pavilion, train depot, and night club from the facilities' previous owners. The buildings, which are all on one city block, will be used to house LMU's arts program.
