Students help restore mussels to East Tennessee river

A collaborative effort is underway to restore the health of the Powell River and save endangered species.

Sara Collins is one of the Lincoln Memorial University students who helped map the Powell River to find the best spots to release thousands of mussels.

"I'm hoping with this we bring back some of the mussels that used to be here and that they can thrive and make the river better," Sara Collins said.

Kids found in 'horrendous' conditions

Three children have been removed from a Grainger County home that was the scene of a drug raid, and the sheriff says they were living in "horrendous" conditions. The raid happened at a home on Gray Road in Rutledge.

Several agencies including the TBI, Grainger County deputies and Rutledge police raided the home of John and Eddie Mullins on Thursday. The raid came after a two-year investigation. They say inside they found weapons, drugs, cash and children.

Mom: Shelter won't euthanize family dog after attack

A Union County mom and dad want their family dog euthanized after an attack.  They said the Union County Humane Society will not fulfill their request.

Ali and Kelley Aljumaily's 4-year-old daughter, Briseis, was attacked by the family's coon hound Saturday morning.  Briseis was sitting cross-legged on the family's back porch with blood in her lap when Kelley rushed toward the commotion.  The parents said their daughter did not cause the attack.

The child received more than 200 staples and stitches along with a five-night hospital stay.

Kentucky man killed in Claiborne County coal mine

A Kentucky coal miner lost his life in East Tennessee Wednesday morning while doing his job.

The accident happened around 5:45 a.m. in the Kopper Glo deep coal mine. The mine sits off of Highway 90 in the Clairfield community in Claiborne County.

When the Claiborne County Sheriff's Department got the call, they believed Jeremy Perkins, 32 of Wallins Creek, KY, was trapped deep inside the coal mine.

After nearly an hour on curvy mountain roads, they arrived to find him dead on the scene.

Union Co. director of schools back on job after suspension

Union Co. director of schools back on job after suspension

Union County's director of schools is back on the job.

Wayne Goforth was suspended last October amid budget issues. The board of education accused him of neglecting his duties.

Earlier this year, the board voted to dismiss Goforth. He later sued the four school board members who voted for his suspension, arguing they violated the Open Meetings Act when they met with an attorney before the vote.

At Monday night's meeting, the school board voted to reinstate Goforth.

Police: Autistic man from Tazewell found safe

Police: Autistic man from Tazewell found safe

Tazewell police say a man who is severely autistic has been found safe.

Police Chief Mark Lamb says Brandon Travis Brewer was found Tuesday just off Bailey Hollow Road just outside the Tazewell city limits. They say he had lost his shoes and his glasses, and had been out in the elements since he went missing.

Officials say he had minor scratches and bruises and was taken to the Claiborne County hospital for treatment. They say he is doing well and in good spirits.

Angels of Hope helps cancer patients

Hundreds of East Tennessee cancer patients benefit from a volunteer effort to help them around the holidays.

"This says love is all you need," reads a hand made pillow case.

Love motivated UT Medical Oncologist Dr. Susan Huntsinger to start a program to help the cancer patients she treats.

"To be able to do this for them and give them just that little bit of spark that little bit of hope is just a wonderful thing," she said.

She realized the holidays can be especially difficult for her patients.
