TN meningitis deaths rise to nine

The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed the fungal meningitis outbreak has killed one more person and sickened another in Tennessee.

The CDC said there are now 69 confirmed cases and a total of nine deaths in that state.

Nationwide the death toll has increased to 23, and the number of confirmed cases is 284.

The meningitis outbreak has now reached to 16 states.

Tennessee has the most confirmed number of cases than any other state.

Meteorite found in Claiborne County to be on display

Eastern Kentucky University has acquired a 33-pound meteorite from an East Tennessee family that used the space rock as a doorstop and flower bed ornament over the years.

The meteorite was initially found in a cow pasture near Tazewell, Tenn., in the 1930s by Tilmon Brooks, the late grandfather of Donna Lewis, a school secretary in Pineville, Ky.

Tests at the University of Tennessee concluded that the meteorite likely came from a known meteorite strike that had first turned up evidence in Tazewell in 1853.

Race for the Cure offers registration discount this weekend

It's been an annual tradition on the streets of Knoxville for more than a decade, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is hoping East Tennesseans will turn out once again this month to help those fighting breast cancer.

For years, this race has seen tremendous growth. In 2010, they hit a record 14,000 participants. Last year, they were down to 11,600. Organizers hope that drop doesn't continue this year.

Students learn real world science on Physics and Chemistry Day

High school students from Tennessee and Kentucky learned how science works in the real world.

On Thursday, 250 students from four area high schools attended Physics and Chemistry Day at Walters State Community College's Claiborne campus.

They saw how astronomy, martial arts and machines all used physics and chemistry during a presentation, and during hands-on experiments with Walters State students.

LMU expands campus into Cumberland Gap

An East Tennessee university will expand this January.

Lincoln Memorial University, in Harrogate, has invested $1.2 million into a project that will transform a part of of downtown Cumberland Gap. The university bought a convention center, log cabin, pavilion, train depot, and night club from the facilities' previous owners. The buildings, which are all on one city block, will be used to house LMU's arts program.

A widespread movement to stand up against drugs and political corruption in East Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky will return to the region in three weeks.

More than 8,000 people from Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee marched to Cumberland Gap in Claiborne County, last year, as a part of the Stand in the Gap coalition.

School systems across the state are seeing more students come through their doors without basic necessities, according to new report from the Tennessee Comptroller's Office of Research and Education Accountability.

The Homeless Students in Tennessee Public Schools report shows startling numbers of students classified as homeless.

In our viewing area, two school systems stood out as having especially high numbers of homeless students.

Cumberland County reported 696 homeless students in the 2010- 2011 school year. Hamblen County reported 649.
