Search for human remains called off after skull discovery
News

(WBIR) A search for human remains in Claiborne County is over, according to the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office.

Two ginseng hunters found a human skull last week near the Cumberland Gap National Park, along the Kentucky-Tennessee line.

Search crews found additional remains on Friday, but the Sheriff's Office said they don't expect to uncover any more.

They said the skull was found in rough terrain and was in the area of a washout during recent severe weather.

The items they found were taken to UT Forensics Center. Investigators said forensics experts already determined the skull is from a middle-aged white female.

They said that's consistent with a missing person's report from Middlesboro, Kentucky. Police said Katherine Heck was in her 50's when she disappeared in 2009.
