68-year-old woman dies in Union Co. mobile home fire

(WBIR) A 68-year-old woman and her two dogs died inside a burning mobile home in Maynardville Wednesday morning.

Firefighters found the body of Laura Hall in the back bedroom of her mobile home on the 3700 block of Maynardville Highway, according to Maynardville police. All fire departments in Union County responded to the home across the street from Maynardville Elementary School just after 6:30 a.m.

Randy and Melina McGhee said they smelled smoke coming from Hall's home. They tried to go inside but to no avail. Hall and her two dogs passed away in the fire.

"Looked inside and I was yelling her name. . . And when I saw the puppies laying in the floor, I knew I saw her stretched across the couch," said Randy McGhee.

While investigators haven't determined an official cause of the fire, they said oxygen tanks inside Hall's home may have sparked the blaze. Officials said they don't believe anyone was with the woman when the residence caught fire.

Authorities have called in the state bomb and arson squad to investigate.
