Former Grainger Co. inmates plan to settle rape lawsuit
News

A lawyer representing three prison inmates in a $186 million rape lawsuit says his clients plan to settle.

The three women say former guard Jessie Cummings repeatedly raped them, and they believe his supervisors, Bobby Owens and Brad Johnson, made it possible.

Their attorney Troy Bowlin and Grainger County Mayor Mark Hipsher tell 10News both sides have reached a confidential agreement.

Hipsher said the agreement is less than $2 million because county insurance will cover the penalty. He says it will not cost taxpayers any money.

The agreement also includes a fourth victim who says she was raped.

Bowlin said it is a fair settlement to his clients. He expects to file the documents within the next couple weeks.

As for Cummings, he is still awaiting trial. A grand jury did indict him.

Bowlin says his supervisors, Owens and Johnson, don't face charges at this time.
