Union Co. jail inmate dies in custody

Authorities in Union County are investigating the death of an inmate.

29-year-old Kyle Rose was found unresponsive in his cell Sunday morning.

Rose was served breakfast around 7:30 and found by jail personnel about 12 minutes later.  He was transported to Tennova North. Rose passed away Wednesday morning.

There's no word yet on a cause of death.  Investigators are waiting on the results of an autopsy.

Teens charged with assault at Grainger school

A Grainger County high school student has been released from the hospital after being treated for injuries received in an assault at Washburn High School on Monday.

In a news release, Grainger County Sheriff Scott Layel said four teen girls were arrested in connection with the assault on a 15-year-old female victim.

One of the girls was charged with aggravated assault and the other three were charged with assault, Layel said.

The victim was being treated at UT Medical Center and was listed in good condition, according to Layel.

Authorities investigating string of Union County fires

Authorities in one East Tennessee county are continuing to investigate a string of property fires.

Over the last several days, two mobile homes, one house and three barns have caught fire in Union County. Two of those incidents happened over the weekend.

Authorities say an arsonist could be involved. They say the fires have happened all across Union County.

Arson suspected in string of Union County fires

Union County officials are searching for the person they believe set six separate fires in six days.

The most recent two happened early Saturday morning.

The first was a barn fire on Hog Skin road around 1:45 a.m. The second fire broke out a few minutes later at a barn just a few miles away on Kettle Hollow Road, according to Gordon Sartain, chief of the Northeast Union Volunteer Fire Department.

The chief says the fires began about six days ago, and firefighters from several districts across the county have worked them for all but one night.

Police: Worker scammed Pump Springs Baptist Church

A Claiborne County church was scammed by a man helping on a renovation project.

41-year-old David Giles was working with Pump Springs Baptist Church.   They were rewiring an old school building where the church is putting a free medical clinic.

Middlesboro Police say Giles picked up copper wire from a Middlesboro electrical supply house, charged it to the church, then sold the wire as scrap at a recycling business.

Police say he also stole a tax exemption from the church.

Authorities are holding Giles in the Bell County, Kentucky jail.

Kids found in 'horrendous' conditions

Three children have been removed from a Grainger County home that was the scene of a drug raid, and the sheriff says they were living in "horrendous" conditions. The raid happened at a home on Gray Road in Rutledge.

Several agencies including the TBI, Grainger County deputies and Rutledge police raided the home of John and Eddie Mullins on Thursday. The raid came after a two-year investigation. They say inside they found weapons, drugs, cash and children.

Mom charged after delivering her baby in hospital parking lot

According to court documents, a pregnant 21-year-old Tazewell woman left the Claiborne County Hospital Monday after a doctor told her doing so would result in her and her unborn child's death.   

Police say Jessica Diamond Miracle signed herself out saying she just wanted to go home.  Miracle then had a baby boy in the hospital parking lot.  

The baby later died in the hospital.  

Miracle is being charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect.  Her bail was set $50,000.  An initial court date has been set for September 27th.
