Two former Grainger Co. jailers plead guilty to charges

Two former Grainger County jailers pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from a TBI investigation.

Jacob Layel, the son of former Grainger County Sheriff Scott Layel, pleaded guilty to theft under $500 on Monday. A judge sentenced him to supervised probation until Nov. 29 and dismissed a charge of official misconduct against Layel.

Tenn. city fined for dumping raw sewage in river


NEEDVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has fined a northeast Tennessee city nearly $101,000 for dumping raw sewage in the Clinch River.

The Kingsport Times News cited a TDEC order this month in reporting that the Sneedville sewer treatment plant had "excessive" sewer plant bypasses of treatment between January and May.

Search for human remains called off after skull discovery

(WBIR) A search for human remains in Claiborne County is over, according to the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office.

Two ginseng hunters found a human skull last week near the Cumberland Gap National Park, along the Kentucky-Tennessee line.

Animal shelter carries out woman's last wish for a pet cemetery

(WBIR - Claiborne County) A Claiborne County animal shelter is helping build the area's first-ever pet cemetery. It will also help fulfill one woman's dying wish.

Sitting near the Claiborne Animal Shelter is 1.5 acres of land. It was bought to develop a pet cemetery. Now, a cat and a dog named Toe-Toe and Blackie are buried on the land. Their owner put in her will that she wanted them to be buried on her property.

A suspect was killed Thursday after a standoff with officers in Grainger County.

Ricky Lynn Bunch, 40, of Tazewell, was shot after a chase and a standoff.
