Union Co. ferry boat needs a facelift


Imagine living by a body of water and having only one convenient way of crossing it-- by ferry boat. Now, this rare ride is in need of repairs.

The Helms Ferry is in a rural part of Sharps Chapel in Union County. It connects an isolated community on one side of Norris Lake with the rest of the county.

Rape case against ex-Claiborne Co. school employee moves forward

(WBIR) The case against a former Claiborne County Schools employee, accused of buying beer for a 13-year-old boy and having sex with him, will move forward.

Michelle Lynn Cox, 43, waived her preliminary hearing, which means her case will go to the grand jury.

Her next court date is set for the morning of Feb. 24. She remains free on bond.

Cox worked as the school nutrition field manager and resigned in June.

Paulette firefighters defend new financial policy

Paulette volunteer firefighters are defending a new method of staying afloat financially. Fire Chief Daniel Rice spoke at Monday night's Union County commission meeting about their new membership fee system.

Commissioners called Rice up to discuss this new system. He said it is a membership fee of $75 a year for residents, and $150 a year per commercial building.

This fee is an optional fee for people who live in the jurisdiction of the Paulette Fire Department. It helps with the upkeep of the fire department's services.

Hookah lounge uses different game plan to attract customers

(WBIR-Cumberland Gap) A new business in historic Cumberland Gap is drawing more college students into town.

GameDay Hookah opened in September.

Traditionally, hookah lounges have more of an Arab feel; but Knoxville's Anthony Cespedes had a different game plan.

He decided to make his into a sports lounge.
