State audit finds multiple problems in Grainger Co. government

State officials are concerned about a number of problems found in a recent audit of Grainger County.

The State Comptroller's office listed a number of issues in multiple departments in a press release Monday, and recommendations for fixing them.

Fire destroys historic Sneedville church


(WBIR-Sneedville) A fire destroyed a historic church in Sneedville on Monday morning.

It happened at Briar Creek Baptist Church around 8 a.m. The building is a total loss.

Hancock Co. church destroyed by fire

A Hancock County church was destroyed by fire Monday morning.

According to Joe Davis, Pastor of Briar Creek Baptist Church in Sneedville, all that's left standing of the small church is the block walls of the sanctuary. They also lost the fellowship hall, which is connected to the main church building.

One of the firefighters, who is also a deacon of the church, was able to cut a hole through a wall into the pastor's office so he could save the church records.

Three taken to hospital after car flips in New Market

(WBIR - Strawberry Plains) One person had to be flown to the hospital via Lifestar Saturday afternoon after a vehicle flipped on Old Dandridge Pike near Strawberry Plains.

According to the New Market Fire and Rescue Chief Sammy Solomon, emergency crews had to fly an unidentified woman to UT Medical Center for her injuries. Another man and a child were also taken by ambulance to UT Medical for their injuries.

It started as an innocent Valentine's Day surprise from a friend and ended in disaster for Sue Downes and her family.

U.S. Marshals arrest Ky. fugitive after 2-year manhunt

A Kentucky fugitive is in custody and facing child sexual abuse charges after a two-year run from the law.

U.S. Marshals say they arrested 50-year-old George "Junior" Hill, Jr. at a rental cabin in Maynardville Tuesday afternoon.

The Kentucky man was wanted on sodomy and sexual abuse charges of victims younger than 12 years old. He was also wanted in Kentucky for a prior conviction for being a felon in possession of a weapon.

He is currently in the Union County jail on $100,000 bond while he waits extradition to Kentucky.

Five former jailers make first court appearance

(WBIR, Rutledge) - Five former workers at the Grainger County Detention Center made their first appearance in court Monday morning after being indicted on various charges.

In November, the Grainger County Detention Center was locked down after three inmates escaped and weren't missed for days.

The escapes exposed major security and operational issues in the jail.

The TBI opened an investigation into the facility and its employees.

A grand jury returned indictments on five of the workers including the sheriff's son.
